Introducing: Berghaus ICONS, featuring Liam Gallagher

Pioneers of British outerwear, Berghaus, have launched their new ICONS collection and campaign, rooted in the styles that defined the brands bond with British culture in the 80s and 90s.

The launch brings back archive classics the Trango, Mera Peak and Lumley jackets, reimagined and modernised for today. Captured by legendary British photographer Alasdair Mclellan, the campaign features icons Liam Gallagher and Sir Chris Bonington wearing pieces synonymous with their past.

Liam Gallagher commented: “My first encounter with Berghaus was through my brother Noel. He purchased a green one in the late 80s and I was always pinching it off him. They were all the rage and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one of my own. I thought to myself ‘when I’m rich and famous I’m getting myself one.’ I finally did that and I’ve still got it to this day. To be asked to work with them on their comeback means a lot.”

Before Britpop, before Oasis, there was Berghaus.

Founded in 1966 by two mountaineers, Berghaus has been a maverick of the outdoor scene for more than half a century. Traditionally appealing to an adventurous clientele who chose Berghaus for its bold yet reliable approach to outdoor clothing, the 80s and 90s saw designs embraced by a whole new group of people. It’s this era that underpins the ICONS range.

Legendary British mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington, who is featured wearing the Lumley, wore Berghaus when he summited Everest 40 years ago, as did Alan Hinkes OBE, the first British mountaineer to summit all of the world’s mountains over 8000 metres high.

In 1997, when Liam Gallagher wore a Berghaus jacket on stage in Oslo, on night one of Oasis’s European leg of the Be Here Now tour, the brand entered a new space.

The logo evolved into a badge of honour across subcultures, with the brand’s bold, multi-panel outerwear becoming synonymous with rave culture and the Madchester scene.

Three decades later, Liam is back in Berghaus and Oasis dominate the airwaves again. The launch of the ICONS collection now marks a major moment for the brand as it embarks on a new chapter of reclaiming its rightful place at the heart of British streetwear.

Today the Trango, the Mera Peak and the Lumley have all been refined and updated for the summits and streets of 2024, but their souls are decades old.

Meet the ICONS

The Trango was launched in 1986 and was initially designed for the first British attempt to summit K2, and quickly adopted by the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team in the Lake District. The A/W ’24 reissue retains its silhouette, bold colourway and lightweight breathability, but now features Gore-Tex’s latest ePE 3L sustainable waterproofing technology.

Taking its name from the Khumbu region of Nepal, the Mera Peak jacket was born in 1991 and is a true all-round performance piece designed with streetwear in mind. The multi-panel, five-pocket jacket was adopted by the ‘Neds’ of the ‘90s house music scene and features waterproof, breathable2L Gore-Tex fabric.

The Lumley down jacket takes its cues from early Berghaus designs focused on specialist warm-giving ski and winter mountaineering wear. In the ‘80s, alpinists such as Sir Chris Bonington wore Berghaus down jackets on expedition, but they made an impression in streetwear in the ‘90s too. The A/W‘24 jacket is padded with 600 fill power Hydrodown®, features an expedition-style hood that is removable, secure pockets, and retro waist and hem adjustment for sharp style and a proper fit.

The ICONS collection is available to shop now on the following: Berghaus.com, Selfridges, HIP, Fat Buddha, Size?, Working Class Heroes and internationally at Storm Store, GOODS, Norse Projects, Anson’s and Zalando.
