Ellesse ambassador Monica Puig tells her story

Last night, ellesse ambassador Monica Puig was presented the ANOC Award for Best Female Athlete at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, for her incredible journey to the gold medal in the Women’s Tennis Singles event.

On her way to the win, Monica overcame three top-seeded players in Garbine Muguruza, Petra Kvitova, and Angelique Kerber, to become the first Puerto Rican athlete to win gold for her country.

She received the award in Doha, Qatar at the year-end ANOC Award Gala, organised and hosted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The gala celebrated the best sporting achievements from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

“A big, big thank you to Puerto Rico. You guys have stood by me through the highs and the lows and thank you for always believing in me.”

“I know for many years to come I will continue to keep making you proud,” she added, before signing off with a “sí se puede,” her Olympic rallying cry of “yes we can!”
