ellesse ambassador Feliciano Lopez and his doubles partner Marc Lopez won the French Open at Roland Garros on Saturday for their first Grand Slam doubles title.
The duo became the first Spanish pair to win at Roland Garros in 26 years with a 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3 victory over their American rivals, the Bryan twins.
Lopez, an ellesse ambassador since 2015, had been wearing ellesse kit throughout the tournament, and his win is significant exposure for the brand, particularly in the USA, the nation their opposition represent.
“You can’t imagine what it means to win a Grand Slam for the first time, against the best players in the sport,” Feliciano Lopez said. “There is no doubt that this is one of the most beautiful wins in my career.”
The Bryans, the most successful pairing of all time, were seeking a third title on the red clay of Roland Garros, following victories in 2003 and 2013, and their 17th Major title together.
In only their second major tournament, the win completes a meteoric rise for the Spanish duo.
Feliciano Lopez says: “For the past 18 months I have been playing doubles and I didn’t think that I would be in a position to win a Grand Slam so quickly. It’s quite unexpected. It’s a great reward, because I have made lots of efforts. I think that our level was quite high. The Bryan brothers are the best doubles team in the world, but we managed to win and that’s great.”
With his Roland Garros triumph, Feliciano cements his place in ellesse sporting history, alongside greats such as 1986 Wimbledon champion Boris Becker, New York City Marathon winner Gianni Poli, and the 1982 World Cup winning Italian football team.
